Flip the Fear

by Barbara Davies, ND

Fear. It’s with us all the time. It dogs our steps, making life more confusing and less joyful than it needs to be. And as much as we try to fight our fears and give them over to the universe, they still seem to nip at our heels, distracting us from our true, heart-centered life.

I’ve written a lot about love in past columns. About loving yourself wholly and freely, allowing yourself to be the conduit for Divine Love and sharing that love with others. So, why am I writing about fear this time? It’s so not me!

We need to discuss fear because fear is the opposite of love. It’s the anti-thesis of love and it gets in the way of our ability to express our love. And, unfortunately, ignoring fear doesn’t make it go away, just as ignoring your shadow on the sidewalk doesn’t make it disappear.

Does your shadow on the sidewalk impede you in any way? Does it slow you down? Do you trip over it? No, of course not. Fear, however, does impede you. It trips you up. It makes you take an alternate route, trying to avoid it. Unlike your shadow on the sidewalk, fear is something that must be dealt with in order to ease your journey and lighten your path.

So, how do you do that? There are several ways. With small fears and worries you can smack your forehead, mutter, “There’s nothing I can do about this, anyway,” and hand it to God. It’s that simple and it usually works quite well for the mundane stuff.

Another way to deal with fear is to go to the source of the fear, see why you’re afraid of something, then go back and re-write your history. Everything is in the NOW, anyway, so it often works to go back and change your story to make the outcome be less fearful.

Let me give you an example. I’ve used the fear of flying as an example in the past, because it’s such a good one! Say you have a fear of flying that you can trace back to a bad flight you had when you were a teenager. There might have been lots of turbulence, or even a close call on landing. It shook you up, and makes you go into panic mode every time you think about getting on a plane. Although you can’t truly change history, you can change the energy of the incident, giving it less power over you now.

How do you do that? There are a couple of different ways. One way is to sit down, takes some deep breaths, get yourself calm and relaxed and re-live the flight, but change it in your imagination. Picture the plane taking off, the flight being uneventful and the fear and adrenaline being absent. See the pleasant flight landing without incident and you reaching your destination rested and refreshed. Allow that feeling to seep into your very marrow.

If you’re having a hard time doing this, keep repeating it until you feel it. Until you truly know in every fiber of your body that plane flights are enjoyable and freeing.

Another way to accomplish an energy change of an incident is to view it from a positive perspective. Back to the plane again! Instead of trying to change the experience itself, try changing your viewpoint of it. You landed, right? You’re alive, aren’t you? Then put it in those terms. Whenever anyone complains about a bumpy landing, I think to myself, “Any landing that doesn’t begin with the word Crash? is a good one,” and move on. So look at it from the attitude of yes, parts of the flight were uncomfortable, but the outcome was good.

All of the above-mentioned practices will help with mild-to-moderate fears. Fears that you know where they came from, they are easily defined and brought to the surface to deal with.

But what about the deeper fears? What about the fears you’re not even aware of because you don’t think of them as fears, but as just the way things are! Let me give another example. Recently I was asked to do some distance work on a young wife and mother who had suddenly developed some inexplicable physical symptoms. Although she was getting regular medical care, a relative asked me to tune in and do energetic healing if appropriate. As soon as I got in contact with this young woman, the first thing I felt was her fear. I asked her what she was afraid of. Her immediate answer was, “I’m afraid people will find out I’m not perfect.”

This made sense, because her relative had described this woman as someone who seemed to have the perfect life. She had a handsome, supportive husband, fabulous, involved children, nice home, enough money, etc. And yet the thing she feared most was being found imperfect.

So, I asked her, “And what will happen when people find out that you’re not perfect?”

Her response was amazing, because she got it in an instant. She knew immediately that if people discover that she’s not perfect, then she can quit pretending to be perfect! I saw the load lift off of her shoulders immediately. I also saw the burden of perfection lifted off of her husband and children, too, because once she got it, the whole family got it. She’d flipped her fear, turning it into a blessing rather than a heavy burden to bear. She’d freed herself of a fear that she was not even conscious of.

So, what part of your life are you not happy with? Can that be boiled down to a fear? If so, try one or more of the ways I’ve suggested: release it, change it by “changing” the history of it, or flip it into something positive and life-affirming.

Why? So you can move forward in your life, embracing the Divine Love that is yours. It makes it so much easier when you’re not clouded by fear. It allows the Love Light to shine through, which, again, is why you’re here.

Flip the fear and be the love.

If you need help, there are many gifted practitioners out there to assist you on your path to freedom and love.

You simply need to take the first step.
