Drugged Milk is Dangerous - Corporate Manipulation

Dangerous milk.jpg

In 2008, the world's largest drug company, Eli Lilly, agreed to buy Monsanto’s bovine growth hormone division. Bovine growth hormone, rbST or rbGH, is legally injected into cows in the US to increase their milk production. Investors wondered why Lilly’s veterinary division, Elanco, paid $300 million for a drug that other companies were distancing themselves from as more and more deplorable health information became available.
The main reason for the unpopularity of rbST or rbGH hormones is the danger that the insulin-like growth factor IGF-1 represents. Many studies confirm that IGF-1, which accelerates cell division, imbalances healthiness in general and intensifies the illnesses in compromised people in particular, such as people battling cancers, especially breast cancers. Normal milk contains some IGF-1 but the milk from cows injected with Eli Lilly’s drug has much greater amounts. (Cows treated with rbGH have much higher incidence of mastitis, a painful infection of the udder.)
Eli Lilly also markets cancer drugs. Their Evista, which is supposed to help reduce the risk of breast cancer, may lower IGF-1 (according to one small study). So on the one hand, Eli Lilly pushes a milk drug that might increase cancer, and on the other, it peddles drugs to treat or “prevent” cancer. The perfect investment combo!
Cows with mastitis (painful for the cows and results in more pus in their milk for us) are treated with anti-biotics. Eli Lilly takes care of that, too. The company sells antibiotics to dairy farmers to treat the infections – which can’t help but increase antibiotic resistance by the consumers.
In 2006, an article in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine concluded that rbGH use, and the subsequent increase in IGF-1 in the US diet, is probably the reason why we have much higher levels of fraternal twins compared to the UK, where rbGH is banned.

What kind of a company are they? How can we trust them with our food?
In a recent New York Times article it was revealed (according to hundreds of internal documents and emails that have been excavated) that Eli Lilly has engaged in a decade-long effort to stiffle the knowledge of the health risks of Zyprexa that they knew about. Lilly executives kept important information from doctors about Zyprexa’s links to obesity and its tendency to raise blood sugar - both known risk factors for diabetes. Zyprexa surveys revealed that 70% of prescribing psychiatrists had at least one patient develop high blood sugar or diabetes. 30% of patients taking the drug for a year gained at least 22 pounds - some over 100 pounds! But Lilly didn’t want their salespeople discussing this. And in the end they paid out hundreds of millions in settlements to people who claimed they developed diabetes or other disorders - a small percentage of the take!
In early 2009, they were forced to pay a record-setting $1.42 billion settlement to the Justice Department. Another record-setting state consumer protection claim of $62 million, for illegally marketing the drug to children and the elderly was also paid out. (It's the cost of doing business).
Lilly employees also ghost-wrote medical journal studies with doctors' John-Henry’s on them on.
Eli Lilly’s infamous Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, was prescribed to pregnant women to prevent miscarriages and other problems till 1971 even though it had been proven in 1953 that it didn’t actually prevent miscarriages. In 1971 the FDA finally alerted the public that the daughters exposed to DES in the womb were at risk of a rare vaginal cancer - bad science and political collusion. An estimated 5-10 million pregnant women received DES. The civil courts held Lilly liable because they should have foreseen, based on their prior information that DES might cause cancer and that Lilly should have done more proper testing and research.

I hope my doctor takes his sales literature home at night and questions what he reads, as by now we know that the information they receive and base our heath decisions on is more corporate manipulation than substance.
