Blood Clots & Stroke - 3 Indicators and Tongue - HELPful tips in an Emergency
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
A friend of mine, an ER nurse, explained that if a stroke victim can be seen within 3 hours, then the effects/damage can be totally reversed. She said that the trick was getting a stroke recognized and then getting the patient medically cared for within those 3 hours. The symptoms can be vague (such as tripping and falling) and disappear and reappear (blanking out and recouping), yet the stroke victim has suffered severe brain damage.
Remember '3' steps: the first three letters of STROKE and one other indication.
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK - SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
and ask the person to 'stick' out his/her tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a possible stroke.
If he/she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call your emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
