Every year, numerous studies are published in respected health journals supporting the use of vital nutrients that science has shown is beneficial in promoting and maintaining good health. Unfortunately, most of us will never hear about these findings. The following research results for 2009 were gathered from leading scientific journals. The findings focus on 3 key nutrients that prior research had shown may reduce the risk of certain diseases. VITAMIN D RESEARCH NEWS
*Journal of the American Geriatrics Society: Seniors with inadequate levels of vitamin D have an increased risk of dying from heart disease than seniors with sufficient levels of vitamin D.
*British Journal of Cancer: Men with higher blood levels of vitamin D have a better chance of surviving prostate cancer.
*Archives of Internal Medicine: Supplementation with vitamin D may slash the risk of fractures. High levels of vitamin D may offer protection against respiratory infections such as colds and flu.
*Journal of Epidemiology: Vitamin D supplementation may decrease risk of eclampsia (toxic condition of pregnancy in which there is increased blood pressure, edema, and kidney damage). Low levels of vitamin D may increase the likelihood of stroke or heart disease.
*Journal of Nutrition: Inadequate levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of vaginal infections.
*Publication Circulation: Cholesterol build up in the blood vessels may be inhibited with vitamin D.
*University of Michigan School of Public Health: Vitamin D deficient young white women have an increased risk of developing high blood pressure in middle age.
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS RESEARCH NEWS
*Behavioral Neuroscience: Deficiency in Omega-3 may help trigger mental illness.
*American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: Omega-3 benefits seniors in the prevention of sight loss. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in fish (such as salmon, sardines, and albacore tuna) may benefit middle age women that suffer from psychological distress.
*British Journal of Nutrition: Omega-3 may safeguard healthy men from chest pain.
*European Journal of Heart Failure: Omega-3 may shield diabetics from heart failure.
*American Journal of Pathology: Age related macular degeneration risk lowered with a diet high in Omega-3.
*Clinical Nutrition: Infertile men appear to have lower levels of Omega-3 in their sperm.
*Journal of American College of Cardiology: Omega-3 fish oil containing 500 mg of EPA and DHA daily helps prevent heart disease in healthy people. Those with heart disease should take 1,000 mg daily to obtain protective benefits.
*The American Journal of Epidemiology: Consuming five or more cups a day of green tea cuts the risk of blood cancers.
*Natural Chemical Biology: Green tea drinkers have a lower risk of brain disorders such as Alzheimer, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s.
*Journal of Nutrition: Green tea combined with exercise helps deter abdominal fat. Green tea lowers the risk of breast cancer.
