Feng Shui: To Live in Balance
Traditional Chinese Feng Shui is based on the study of balance and harmony, in both an internal and external sense. From the time when Feng Shui first came into existence in China, 5000 years ago, the study of geomancy was based on land forms and structures that were oriented according to the magnetic North/South compass directions. In those days Feng Shui was used for the purpose of locating the best burial sites (Yin Feng Shui), as the Chinese people practiced ancestor worship. They believed providing the ancestors with the most auspicious burial sites would bless the descendants with good children, good luck, and good fortune.
In time, the ancients realized that the same principles could be applied to benefit the living (Yang Feng Shui). The study of Feng Shui and Chinese metaphysics evolved to what we have today, along with the teachings of Lao Tze – the Yijing (I Ching), Confucius and Buddhist philosophy.
In an external sense, in order for us to live in balance, we have to look at what is in our external environment; whether it is at home or at work, or extended to our town and country. In an internal sense, we have to look at what is handed to us in our destiny; with this we can see what is lacking within our spirit, and do what we need to in order to restore the balance.
Within our environment Feng Shui applies the Yin and Yang principle, together with the interaction between different energies (Qi). For instance: Wu Xing, the Five Elements Transformation cycles are used. Traditional Chinese Feng Shui also takes into account the important attributes of Time and Space – Xuan Kong Da Gua, Xuan Kong Fei Xing formulas, and along with the people who occupy the space – their Ming Gua. We and everything around us are all manifestations of different kinds of living energy. We all come from the same source within our universe.
The Five Elements are comprised of: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The Yijing classifies everything in the universe into these five categories of energy (Qi), in order to translate the intangible into the tangible; to make it easier for us to comprehend and understand.
When we live in harmony, there is balance between the Yin (passive) and the Yang (active) components of the energies (Qi). This combines and forms a harmonious flow of the five different elements of Qi in our environment, and also within us.
In order for us to live in balance internally, we have to look at what we were born with. This can be analysed by our destiny chart – Ba Zi, based on the year, month, day and hour of our birth. From this analysis, we get to know the different components of our spirit: our strengths and weaknesses; how to recognise and make the most of our luck when it comes. Once when we find out what is lacking within us, we can determine how to act and what to do in order to bring the balance into our lives.
