Bisphenol A FREE
Health Canada released the detailed breakdown of results after a lot of criticism and demands for transparency and questions about the veracity of the test results. The aim of the study was to compare the levels of BPA migrating from polycarbonate baby bottles to those made from substitutes, under real-life conditions as most often used.
Bisphenol A, a hormone disrupter that can cause reproductive damage, is a building block in polycarbonate plastic, but not in the now popular substitutes, such as polypropylene. The Canadian ban is restricted to polycarbonate bottles. The study found much higher readings of leaching among the polycarbonate bottles — reaching 59.92 parts per billion after 238 hours.
“BPA-free” brands with detectable levels ranging from 0.002 to 0.025 parts per billion (which means that the testing equipment can read parts per trillion which is debatable) included Gerber, Medela, Whittlestone, Adiri, Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow, Nuby and a generic house brand sold in dollar stores in Canada.
There were no detectable levels found in the Green to Grow, BornFree and Thinkbaby bottles after 238 hours.
Pete Myers, an internationally recognised scientist who has published extensively about health risks associated with bisphenol A, said the trace levels found are “not very concerning” from a health perspective but wonders nonetheless, why they were found.
